New Delhi | India has been elected as Co-Chair of the Regional Committee of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP) for the 2025-2028 term. Represented by Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana, IAS, Surveyor General of India, the election underscores India’s growing influence and leadership in global geospatial information management.
The election took place during the 14th Plenary Meeting of UN-GGIM-AP, held from 24–26 September 2025 in Goyang-si, Republic of Korea, bringing together delegates, experts, and observers to discuss critical regional geospatial strategies.
Makwana said, “I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in India. We aim to promote inclusivity, transparency, and data-driven decision-making across the Asia-Pacific region, while strengthening partnerships and building capacity to deliver measurable impact.”
India’s new role will focus on advancing innovation, fostering collaboration, and implementing the UN-GGIM Strategic Framework, addressing digital transformation, good governance, and regional capacity building.

UN-GGIM-AP, representing 56 Asia-Pacific nations, works to maximize the social, economic, and environmental benefits of geospatial information, ensuring countries collaborate on effective policies, standards, and shared solutions.
India’s election as Co-Chair marks a significant step in shaping geospatial strategies, further solidifying its position as a leader in the regional and global geospatial landscape.
